History: (Story To Be Continued)
Traditional Thai Foot Massage is a unique and powerful therapy and an ancient form of therapeutic healing. Its roots are in India where it was brought to Thailand over 2000 years ago by Ayurvedic doctors and Buddhist monks. It combines acupressure, energy balancing and stretching with applied yoga exercises. As Buddhism proliferated throughout India, it carried with it this healing medicine. In its early development, it found its way to Southeast Asia and for centuries, it was performed by monks as one element of indigenous Thai medicine. Whereas most traditional Western and Eastern massage practices focus on tissue manipulation and the working of the muscles and joints, Thai Massage barely touches on either of these. It is more a manipulation of the pressure points, energy lines, and basic body forces which together produce a highly therapeutic effect. These traditions operate on the belief that applying pressure to the more than 7,000 nerves in the foot can release energetic blockages in the rest of the body. Foot massage and reflexology can be used as pain relief, to help alleviate stress and even to speed up injury recovery.
There are four elements of traditional Thai medicine:
- Nutritional counselling (Focusing on diet)
- Herbs (Given both internally and externally)
- Spiritual counselling (Primarily meditation and the Buddhist principles)
- Thai Massage (Which formed the backbone of the physical treatment)
Whether you’re giving yourself a foot rub, or enjoying a treatment from a reflexology practitioner, a foot massage can be a rewarding complimentary massage treatment that positively impacts your entire body.
How does it work? Traditional Thai Foot Massage is practised everywhere in Thailand today and is a primary component of Traditional Thai Medicine. Using thumbs and a wooden acupressure tool, massage is applied to the lower legs and feet using rubbing, friction, kneading, stretching and vibration techniques.
Pressure points are thought to be areas along ‘energy lines’ which some consider as metaphors and others take to be real. Energy lines in Thailand are called ‘Sen Lines’

Massaging the extremities helps with the circulation of blood in the legs and feet as well as reflecting around the body, promoting cell repair and growth.
- A drop in cortisol
Firm pressure on the solar plexus region of the foot is said to encourage a drop in the body’s stress hormone, cortisol.
